Here is a quick review of neuron structure. Signals are received at dendrites, which possess large surface area for receiving signals. Impulse transmission occurs along the axon. Axons have a complex cytoskeleton and many mitochondria. Where the axon joins the cell body is the axon hillock; axons can branch forming collateral axons (nerves are bundles of many axons. At the end of the axon is the synaptic terminal, which together with the adjacent target cell surface forms the synapse. The neuron cell body contains the nucleus and most of the organelles found in normal cells.
